Some of the most severe damage from this outbreak occurred Friday evening in the town of Union City, Michigan, located just west of Interstate 69 in the southern part of the state. Homes along the St. Joseph River were destroyed in the town of about 1,700, left unrecognizable by the killer tornado.

Lisa Piper stood on her back deck and videoed a terrifying scene that played out on the other side of frozen Union Lake as a funnel cloud formed and then dropped toward the ground. Trees were torn from their roots and debris flew into the air.

"It's lifting houses!" she said. As the devastation continued, she exclaimed: "Oh my heart is pounding. Oh, I hope they're OK."

Part of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Union City was damaged, although its nearly 150-year-old grand piano was spared, it said in a post on Facebook.

Michigan gets an average of 15 tornadoes a year, which is much less than the 155 for Texas and 96 for Kansas, according to David Roth, a meteorologist at the weather service's Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer activated the state's Emergency Operations Center Friday "to coordinate an all-hands-on-deck response to severe weather," she said in a statement.

In Oklahoma, a tornado cut around a 4-mile path of damage in Okmulgee County, some 30 miles south of Tulsa, although more details wouldn't be clear until daybreak, said Jeff Moore, the county's emergency manager.

Some people were injured, although Moore couldn't provide an exact number or their conditions, and large trees were toppled. Power was out for more than 1,600 people, according topoweroutage.us.

"We're just getting everywhere as fast as we can, clearing roads as fast we can," Moore said.

Information from the Associated Press was used in this report.

Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette revisits the real-life couple's relationship before their tragic deaths

NEED TO KNOW

  • The show makes it clear that while it's inspired by their romance, it's also "dramatized or fictionalized for storytelling purposes"

  • Actress Daryl Hannah, who dated JFK Jr. and is portrayed in the show, called the portrayal of her "untrue"

Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessettehas introduced a whole new group of fans to theiconic '90s couple.

John F. Kennedy Jr.(Paul Anthony Kelly) andCarolyn Bessette's (Sarah Pidgeon) relationship is front and center in theRyan MurphyFX limited series, which is inspired by the events of the political heir andformer Calvin Klein employee'spassionate, tumultuous romance.

Some things were transposed from reality to screen: The political heirreallywas responsible for the death ofDaryl Hannah's (Dree Hemingway) dog amid theirsplit, per PEOPLE editor-at-largeLiz McNeiland JFK's former assistant RoseMarie Terenzio's 2024 book,JFK Jr.: An Intimate Oral Biography.

But as the showrunner makes clear in the beginning of each episode, certain aspects of the show, including people and events, were "dramatized or fictionalized for storytelling purposes."

Below, here are seven detailsLove Story: JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessettefabricated.

It's not confirmed that JFK Jr. and Bessette met at a fundraiser

While in the show, JFK Jr. and Bessette first cross paths after being introduced by Calvin Klein (Alessandro Nivola) at a 1992 fundraiser, there are varying accounts of how they initially met in real-life.

InElizabeth Beller's biography,Once Upon A Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, the author wrote that JFK Jr. met Bessette while he was getting fitted for a suit at Calvin Klein.

"Calvin — along with his wife,Kelly Klein, and ... assistant MJ Bettenhausen — decided it should be [Carolyn], the most effervescent person on the sales floor, who would show John the selection of clothing," Beller wrote. "Unsurprisingly, John came out of the meeting smitten, with a few men's suits and Carolyn's phone number. He called within days."

However,Love Storyexecutive producer Brad Simpson toldUSA Todayin February 2026 that there are different versions of the series of events, but "the most common narrative [of] how they met was at this fundraiser ... so we decided that would be their first meeting."

Bessette didn't necessarily discover Kate Moss

Sarah Pidgeon as Carolyn Bessette in FX's 'Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette'Credit: FX

In the first episode of the limited series, Bessette has a big role inKate Moss' modeling break, as sheadvocates for her as the best fitfor the Calvin Klein "Obsession" underwear campaign.

Though this did happen in real life, the scene suggests Bessette "discovered" the British supermodel, but she had actually already begun hermodeling careerat the time.

Moss first walked down the runway in 1992 at the Dolce & Gabbana show in Milan, though she did gain more recognition following the Calvin Klein campaign. (Meanwhile, she and Bessette lived in the same West Village apartment building around that time.)

Daryl Hannah said the portrayal of her is "untrue"

Dree Hemingway as Daryl Hannah in 'Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette'Credit: Eric Liebowitz/FX

The first few episodes of the series chronicle JFK Jr.'s on-again, off-again romance with actress Hannah. However, she wrote in an essay forThe New York Timesthat the portrayal of her is "not even a remotely accurate representation of my life, my conduct or my relationship with John."

"The actions and behaviors attributed to me are untrue," the actress wrote in the scathing essay, which went on to refute several scenes from the series.

"I have never used cocaine in my life or hosted cocaine-fueled parties," she wrote. "I have never pressured anyone into marriage. I have never desecrated any family heirloom or intruded upon anyone's private memorial."

Hannah added, "I have never planted any story in the press. I never compared Jacqueline Onassis' death to a dog's. It's appalling to me that I even have to defend myself against a television show. These are not creative embellishments of personality. They are assertions about conduct — and they are false."

JFK Jr. didn't propose to Bessette with his mother's ring

When JFK Jr. proposes to Bessette in episode 5, he uses his late mother's (Naomi Watts)ring. But in real life, JFK Jr. did not use one ofJackie Kennedy'sringsto propose.

Instead, he gave her a bespoke ring that was designed by his mom's longtime companion, diamond baronMaurice Tempelsman, and inspired by his late mother's "swimming ring."

According toCarole Radziwill's 2007 book,What Remains, JFK Jr. gave Jackie's ring to Bessette as a gift later, which was also echoed in McNeil and Terenzio's book.

"John gave Carolyn two rings. There was his mom's 'swimming ring' - that was Jackie's name for the ring she wore when she didn't wear her wedding ring-designed by Jean Schlumberger," Terenzio said in the book. "Bunny Mellon (Jackie's close friend) had it and had given it to John. Jackie's swimming ring was emeralds and sapphires. Carolyn's engagement ring from Maurice was in the same style with diamond and sapphires around a band."

Their N.Y.C. park fight wasn't about their engagement

Episode 5 dives into JFK Jr. and Bessette's infamous fight in New York City's Battery Park. While this dramatic and public incident did happen in real life, itsreasoning (and location!) were different.

According to McNeil and Terenzio's book, the couple got into a fight while walking their dog in Washington Square Park in February 1996. After the confrontation was captured by a nearby photographer and videographer, the incident was later published in theNew York Daily News.

While it's sparked byBessette resisting JFK Jr.'s proposal in the show, the real-life fight "stemmed from Carolyn's ongoing complaint that John let people walk all over him," JFK Jr.'s friend Steven M. Gillon wrote in his 2019 biographyAmerica's Reluctant Prince.

Terenzio also noted that in her and McNeil's book, saying that the fight was centered around "him being taken advantage of by his friends" after an incident at a friend's wedding.

As JFK Jr. prepares for his wedding amid workplace tensions over revenue streams atGeorge, his co-founder, Michael J. Berman, encourages him to publish his wedding photos in the magazine.

Terenzio tells PEOPLE that Berman "would never suggest" something like that in real life.

JFK Jr. and Bessette didn't sleep on the beach the night before their wedding

Paul Anthony Kelly as John F. Kennedy Jr. and Sarah Pidgeon as Carolyn Bessette in 'Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette'Credit: FX

Love Story's wedding episode highlights the couple's 1996 nuptials in Georgia, but it adds some fictionalized elements to the big day — including them sleeping on the beach the night before.

However, a source tells PEOPLE that they slept at Cumberland Island's Greyfield Inn in separate bedrooms because he "didn't want to see her the night before the wedding" and was "being traditional."

Meanwhile, the bride's hairstylistGeorge Kyriakos toldMcNeil and Terenziothat JFK Jr. had spent that night sleeping on the couch in his and his then-wife Jackie's room.

"It was the whole don't-sleep-with-the-bride-the-night-before-the-wedding thing," he told the co-authors.

The couple spent time apart on the day of the wedding before heading down the aisle, with JFK Jr. enjoying the beach with friends and family — far different from him going skinny-dipping with Bessette on the morning of the big day like he does in the show.

Rita Hayworth's 5 Spouses: From Orson Welles to Prince Aly Khan

Rita Hayworth, "The Love Goddess," was married five times before her death in 1987.

In the beginning of her career, in 1936, she met her first husband and manager, Edward Judson. He helped reshape Hayworth's image and propelled her career, helping to secure her breakout role inYou'll Never Get Rich, alongsideFred Astaire.

Hayworth went on to star in other films includingBlood and SandandThe Strawberry Blondewhile married to Judson. When she filed for divorce from him in 1942, she added a complaint of cruelty.

Hayworth went on to marry four more times to husbands Orson Welles, Prince Aly Khan, Dick Haymes and James Hill. She welcomed a daughter named Rebecca with Welles and a daughter named Princess Yasmin with Khan.

"When I look back on my marriages, or the breakups, sure I know the pain I went through, but that's part of life and it has its own value," Hayworth once said.

Here is everything to know about Rita Hayworth's five husbands.

Edward Judson

Hayworth met salesman and promoter Judson in 1936 while she was pursuing an acting career in California. The two married in Las Vegas the following year when Hayworth was 18 years old and Judson was more than twice her age.

He served as Hayworth's manager and at his recommendation, the star — who was born Margarita Carmen Cansino — changed her stage name to Rita Hayworth (her mother's maiden name) and underwent a drastic makeover which included dying her hair auburn and undergoing electrolysis treatments to push her hairline back, according to Susan Ware'sNotable American Women: A Biographical Dictionary.

Judson catapulted Hayworth's career, helping her land a deal with Columbia Pictures and a role inOnly Angels Have Wings, a catalyst for future blockbuster parts including the 1946 filmGilda, in which she played the titular role.

Despite a flourishing career, Hayworth's marriage was falling apart. In Barbara Leaming's 1989 biography of Hayworth titledIf This Was Happiness, she wrote that Judson encouraged Hayworth to have sex with powerful men including Columbia executive Harry Cohn, to further her career.

When Hayworth reportedly refused, it was the onset of a decades-long battle between her and the mogul.

"I married him for love, but he married me for an investment," she claimed of Judson. "For five years he treated me as if I had no mind or soul of my own."

Hayworth filed for divorce in 1942 with a complaint of cruelty.

Orson Welles

In 1942, the same year Hayworth filed for divorce from Judson, she met her soon-to-be second husband, filmmaker Welles.

He was shooting a film in Brazil when he first laid eyes on Hayworth in her iconic pin-up photo forLifemagazine. Upon his return to the United States, he pursued the actress.

"I saw that fabulous still inLifemagazine," Welles told Leaming. "Where she's on her knees in bed. And that's when I decided: 'When I come back, that's what I'm going to do!' "

On Sept. 7, 1943, Hayworth — who was starring in the musicalCover Girlat the time — took her lunch break and went to the Santa Monica Courthouse with Welles to get married.

"I'm going to marry Orson Welles!" she proclaimed on set earlier that morning.

One year after tying the knot, the couple welcomed a daughter, Rebecca. However, their marriage had already begun deteriorating after Welles was involved in several alleged infidelities.

By March 1946, the couple had separated, with the mother of one and her daughter living on their own. Hayworth filed for divorce and it was finalized in 1948.

Prince Aly Khan

In 1948, while on vacation in Europe, Hayworth attended a charity ball at the Eiffel Tower where she gave a French speech on behalf of poor children, catching the eye of Khan who was in attendance.

While he was married at the time, the prince pursued Hayworth with romantic gestures including filling her suites with flowers and buying a house near her Brentwood mansion to spend time with her. The two engaged in an affair which was condemned around the world by various organizations, including the Vatican, per Leaming.

After legally ending their previous marriages, Khan and Hayworth married on May 27, 1949, at the town hall in Vallauris. The mayor presided over the ceremony and thousands gathered in the streets to catch a glimpse of the new royal couple as they departed the venue.

Hayworth was secretly pregnant at the time of their wedding, and seven months after becoming husband and wife, the pair welcomed their daughter, Princess Yasmin, on Dec. 18, 1949.

Hayworth struggled to adapt to her new life as a royal in Europe, which consisted of attending high society events with her husband. Coupled with Khan's alleged extramarital affairs, it led Hayworth to take her daughters and move back to America in 1951. She filed for divorce upon her return, on the grounds of "extreme cruelty, entirely mental in nature."

Yasmin remembers her parents' relationship differently. "My earliest memories of my mother and father together were when I was 8 or 9," she wrote for PEOPLE in June 1987, adding, "Theirs was a truly good relationship."

While the divorce was granted in 1953, Hayworth and Khan were embroiled in a lengthy custody battle until his death in a car accident in 1960.

Dick Haymes

After Hayworth and Khan called it quits, theMiss Sadie Thompsonstar engaged in a relationship with Argentine singer, songwriter and actor, Haymes. The couple tied the knot in 1953 at the Sands Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, but trouble plagued them early on.

The newlyweds were entangled in a custody battle with Hayworth's ex, and Haymes, who lost American citizenship rights after applying for an exemption from the World War II draft as an Argentinian citizen, was facing deportation and a mountain of debt.

Problems between the pair continued to escalate over the course of their marriage. While out drinking one night in 1955, Haymes struck Hayworth in the face at the Cocoanut Grove, leaving her with a black eye.

"I could hardly believe I could be a princess one minute and be treated like that the next," she told fellow actress June Allyson, per Leaming.

Hayworth fled to New York and filed for divorce from Haymes in 1955.

James Hill

Hayworth met her fifth and final husband, film producer Hill, when she was working on the 1958 drama,Separate Tables. Produced by Hill, the movie also featured Burt Lancaster andDavid Nivenand was one of the last big films she starred in during her career.

After a four-month romance, the couple tied the knot at her Beverly Hills home and went on to work together again inThe Happy Thieves, which was released in 1962.

According to Hill's 1983 book,Rita Hayworth: A Memoir, tension mounted in their marriage as he wanted her to continue working in show business while she was ready to retire. When Hayworth filed for divorce she claimed "extreme mental cruelty" which was later corroborated by Charlton Heston's autobiography.

Hayworth and Hill divorced in 1961.
