Two U.S. Embassy staff members, the director of the Chihuahua State Investigations Agency and a state police officer died in a mountain traffic accident following an operation to destroy clandestine drug labs, Mexico and U.S. authorities said.

USA TODAY

The "instructors" with the U.S. Embassy were returning after taking part in U.S.-Mexico training in anti-narcotics operations with state police when the accident occurred Sunday morning, April 19, near the town of Morelos in southwesternChihuahua, the state attorney general's office said in a statement.

Chihuahua State Investigations Agency Director Pedro Román Oseguera Cervantes and officer Manuel Genaro Méndez Montes also died in the crash, Chihuahua state officials said.

The identities of the U.S. government personnel were not disclosed.

Chihuahua State Investigations Agency along with the Mexican military raided large, clandestine methamphetamine labs in the mountains between Guachochi and Morelos, Chihuahua, on Saturday, April 18, 2026, in Mexico.

A 'solemn reminder of the risks' faced by Mexican, US officers

U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Ronald Johnson offered condolences in a statement on X following the deaths of the U.S. and Mexican officials.

"We honor their dedication and tireless efforts to confront one of the greatest challenges of our time," Johnson stated. "Our thoughts and prayers are with them and their loved ones.

Meth labs raided in the mountains of Chihuahua

The deadly accident occurred a day after Chihuahua state police announced that a pair of large clandestine methamphetamine labs were raided by state investigators along with the Mexican military in the mountain forests between Guachochi and Morelos.

The "narcolab" was divided into five sections, featuring more than a dozen ovens, scores of gas cylinders and campgrounds for crews, the state attorney general's office said.

The rural mountains are in the southwestern corner of the state of Chihuahua near the border with Sinaloa.

Nicole Kidman details 'harrowing' memory of learning her mom died right before going onstage: 'I was alone'

Nicole Kidman explains how her mother's death inspired her to look into becoming a death doula.

Key Points

  • The "harrowing" experience occurred while the actress was attending the 2024 Venice International Film Festival.

  • Moments before she was set to take the stage, the Babygirl actress learned that her mother had died.

Nicole Kidmanis ready to talk about one of the most devastating experiences of her life.

TheScarpettaactress, 58, recently made headlines for announcing that she isin training to become a death doula, someone who assists individuals and families with end-of-life care by offering guidance, companionship, and support. During a Saturday sit-down with Hoda Kotb at HISTORYTalks in Philadelphia, Kidman shared that her interest in the surprising career pivot began with the loss of her mother, Janelle Ann Kidman.

Nicole attended the Venice Film Festival in September 2024 and experienced an "enormous high" after winning the festival's Best Actress award for her role inBabygirl. And then the tragic news reached her ear.

"I was about to go onstage, and I found out my mother had died, and I went right back to the room in Venice, got into bed and was completely devastated and thought, 'I do not know how I'm gonna move forward or function now,'" Kidman told Kotb, perPEOPLE. "She was so much a part of my existence. So the idea of being there at that particular moment was harrowing."

Kidman then recounted herimmediate efforts to leave Veniceso she could grieve with her family.

"I remember getting into a boat in the canal, literally at night, trying to find my way to the airport, and then turning around going, ‘I can’t even do this,'" she told the audience. "Then I went back to bed. And I was alone. My husband wasn’t there, my children weren’t there. I was there to win an award, which should’ve been a beautiful thing. That, there, is the contrast of life.”

Kidman said she walked away from the experience with the knowledge that she is "resilient" and can "survive pretty much anything." It also granted her a new perspective on loss.

Addressing her interest in becoming a death doula, Kidman noted that the work it involves is "really fascinating"

She explained, "It’s very beautiful, and you have to be a certain personality to be able to do it. But I found out that I’m actually that personality. It’s very important to me."

Kidman continued, "There is always suffering, but if there are people there who can help with that, help those final stages be less painful — if you feel the connection in your heart, then that’s lovely. So that’s what I’m exploring."

Babygirldirector Halina Reijn accepting her award on Nicole's behalf, taking the stage and reading remarks from the actress. Four months later, Kidmanpaid tribute to her mom in an emotional speechat the Palm Springs International Film Festival where she accepted the International Star Award fromJamie Lee Curtis.

"This is for my mom," Kidman said on the stage. "My whole career has been for my mom and my dad, and they're not here now, but I still want to keep working and giving to the world because I love what I do, and I love you all, and I'm so grateful for the privilege to be a part of this film community."

Wiping away tears, she continued, "I'm sorry I'm crying. I didn't want to do that, but I feel my mama right now, so this is for you, Mama."

Kidman first spoke of her interest in becoming a death doula at a University of San Francisco presentation attended by theSan Francisco Chronicle.

"As my mother was passing, she was lonely, and there was only so much the family could provide," she shared. "Between my sister and I, we have so many children and our careers and our work, and wanting to take care of her because my father wasn’t in the world anymore, and that’s when I went, 'I wish there was these people in the world that were there to sit impartially and just provide solace and care.'"

Tom Hanks, Robert Downey Jr., more CinemaCon stars reveal their new movies

Downey's Iron Man and Evans' Captain America tussled to superhero movie lovers' content 10 years ago in "Captain America: Civil War." They're butting heads on screen once more in theMarvel Cinematic Universe, but now Downey's under a very different mask.

AtCinemaCon, the convention for movie theater owners, Downey was on hand to debut the first trailer for Marvel's"Avengers: Doomsday"(in theaters Dec. 18), which marks the Oscar winner's first appearance as the villainous Doctor Doom.

Director Joe Russo (center) tries to keep it civil between "Avengers: Doomsday" costars Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans at CinemaCon.

"What I want to do is give away, like, 37,000 spoilers right now. Should I, just for fun?" Downey said, teasing the crowdthat gave him a standing ovation during his entrance. He added that Doom as a character is "wildly epic, to say the least."

Instead of reveals, Downey introduced fresh footage. While Disney didn't release it immediately online and to the public, those in attendance at CinemaCon offered up details on social media. Details apparently included anappearance by the Fantastic Fourand a throwdown between Shang-Chi (Simu Liu) and Gambit (Channing Tatum), plus Thor (Chris Hemsworth) battling Doom andCaptain America calling on Thor's hammer Mjolnironce more.

Evans joined Downey on the CinemaCon stage withsome faux awkwardness.

"Hey, pal," Evans said. "Things are still a little tense," Downey quipped back.

"I said I would only come back for a real reason, and in 'Doomsday' there is a very real reason that these superheroes need Steve Rogers," explained Evans, who bowed out of the MCU after 2019's "Avengers: Endgame."

"I love you, Downey, but this guy – I don’t like him," Evans joked about Doom.

"Those are fighting words," Downey added.

The all-star cast for "Doomsday" also includes Tom Hiddleston, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen,Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Joseph Quinn,Pedro Pascal, James Marsden,Anthony Mackie,Sebastian Stan,Letitia Wright,Tenoch Huerta Mejía,Winston Duke,Paul Rudd, Danny Ramirez,Wyatt Russell,Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen and Lewis Pullman.

Disney also announced the launch of Infinity Vision, a new partnership between the studio and global cinemas to help audiences seek out the best theatrical experience. Infinity Vision will start with the September rerelease of "Endgame" and also will be available for "Doomsday."
